The way you wear your hat
May. 13th, 2009 09:25 pmAnd before I go to bed I give you a set of drabbles in which Billy is a crooner and Dom his piano player. I think you can't go wrong with Big Band music *clicks fingers like Frank Sinatra* :)
Billy's dressing room was small with a lingering smell of damp but he didn't mind. He liked the old theatres, their history gave them character, and the well used feeling of the room spoke of the greats that had been there before. The aging posters pasted backstage advertised past concerts for many of his heroes and Billy was thrilled to be literally walking in their footsteps.
The theatre's management had put flowers in the room, which Billy appreciated, and had also provided a bottle of champagne which he appreciated even more.
Dom held up the bottle and two glasses "Drink?"

Dom tipped Billy's hat until it sat at the appropriate jaunty angle. Billy thought the fedora looked better on Dom who had the right swagger to wear it but as the piano player Dom's job was to discreetly accompany Billy, not to draw attention to himself.
Dom was neat and straight backed and as he played on stage while Billy sang. Seeing Dom, the man with an excess of character, be quiet and unobtrusive always amused Billy. Dom was rarely silent any other time.
"You look handsome." Dom nodded with approval as he stepped back to appraise Billy's stage outfit.
~~~~~~
The audience laughed at the punch line and Billy took a sip of water. He was sweating inside his tux, the stage lights were hot and the sold out crowd filled the theatre with warm bodies on a warm night. Ladies in the audience were fanning themselves but were smiling and relaxed in their seats despite the discomfort.
Billy allowed himself to savour a moment of contentment. He loved what he did and felt very lucky to be able to do it.
The crowd fell quiet and with all eyes on him Billy began the introduction to his next song.
~~~~~~
There was a murmur of pleased recognition as Dom played the first bars of One For My Baby. It was Billy's favourite part of the show, the song was a classic and he sang it to Dom.
The spotlight followed Billy as he walked over to where Dom sat; he leaned casually against the piano and its shine reflected him. Billy sang to Dom's Joe the bartender, telling him his story and Dom looked up from his sheet music into Billy's eyes. The small smile quirking his lips said 'this is my favourite part too', 'I love you' and 'later'.
~~~~~~~~
Billy kissed yet another cheek and made yet another promise to call and finally backed out of the room. The after show party was still swinging but Billy was tired and wanted to shed his tux and its accompanying Rat Pack persona.
As the hotel's lift doors closed Dom reached over and cupped the back of Billy's neck. He tangled his fingers in Billy's hair and pulled him close.
"You were great tonight."
Billy took off his fedora and put it onto Dom's head. "So were you."
Dom shifted the hat until it was angled over one eye and smiled.
