Gather round my little Monaboyders, and let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time there was a very normal, ordinary bloke who decided he'd quite like to make films for a living. |
He used quite a bit of kiwi ingenuity, a great deal of creativity and not a small amount of madness. He made a name for himself as a very good director (not all of his films were in Bad Taste, you could even say that his creations were quite Heavenly Creatures, *ahem*). |
He then thought for his next challenge he'd film 'Lord of the Rings'. "Puppets instead of actors?" he thought to himself, "Maybe not". Two of the most pivotal roles were that of Merry and Pippen (truly the heart of the films and don't let anyone ever tell you differently). But who to cast? |
He thought Dominic Monaghan would make a spiffy Merry. |
And Billy Boyd would be a lovely Pippen. |
"New Zealand's thataway, right?" |
"Aye lad, it's a fair distance, but I'm sure it will be lovely." |
So these two fine actors flew all the way to NZ to get all hobbity. Naturally they were a little nervous. |
Would they have anything in common with the other actors? Would they make new friends? (Stop laughing dear reader, they weren't to know what was to come!) |
They were thrown right into action (no time for Dom to even change his hat). Learning lines and getting some fightin' skills! |
They were pleased to realise that they had a lot in common with the rest of the hobbits. Even the Americans were alright - though one had very large eyes and the other a very large vocabulary. |
But Billy and Dom seemed to gel together the easiest right from the start. |
They helped each other out quite a lot, and came to rely on each other.
They had almost all their scenes together and so spent a lot of time together in front of the camera. |
Which naturally led to spending a lot of time together behind-the-scenes. |
They were both so happy to have made a pal to ensure jolly times as they flew all over New Zealand. |
They were very dedicated to their craft. |
They were wind-swept and interesting. |
There were a lot of jokes made and many tears of joy shed. |
This natural camaraderie soon led to a lot of hanky-panky (which the director tolerated but would rather it was kept off set, and didn't mess up the costumes or make-up). |
"Hanky panky? What does she mean Bill?"
"She's a fangirl, something we will come to know a lot about later in life." |
"Fangirls, huh? And they think we might have got up to less than platonic activities with each other during our time in NZ?"
"Aye Dom, and who are we to spoil their delusions, I mean allusions. Carry on with your tale strange lady." |
Ahem, as I was saying. They fell deeply in love with each other during this time. DEEPLY IN LOVE! |
This lusty love was quite possibly helped along with lots of fine kiwi lager... |
...that little known aphrodisiac salted pork (which if you don't know, was particularly good)... |
...and maybe even from smoking a little of the local green. |
"Oi, are you a copper?"
"You were spying on us!" |
They also realised just how beautiful the other was, though their love was obviously based on more than just looks. I mean, Billy had to look beyond Dom's wig for a start. |
Their love was strengthened during difficult and sometimes dangerous filming conditions. |
"Wow, that really was a very large splinter after all." |
